We Support our Veterans

Builders Care, the charitable arm of the Northeast Florida Builders Association (NEFBA), was contacted by a family member of an 88-year-old veteran who became a victim of contractor fraud. They learned that the elderly gentleman had hired a contractor to repair his roof, but the contractor repaired only a portion of the roof, took the money, and never returned.

Builders Care presented the story to Michael Lenahen, chair of the NEFBA Remodelers Council, to ask if he could assess the homeowner’s needs and develop a plan. After witnessing the extensive long-term damaged caused by water intrusion, Michael rallied the board of the Remodelers Council to adopt this home as its Community Project for 2018.

Led by Michael’s efforts, the Remodelers Council summoned the generosity of (25) NEFBA member subcontractors and suppliers to donated volunteer labor and materials to Improve the quality of life of this devoted veteran.

Once completed, the value of donated labor and material, including cabinets, appliances, flooring, and furniture totaled nearly $60,000, and was delivered at no cost to the homeowner.

“Being able to help this gentleman return to a safe and secure home was an honor and a privilege,” said Michael Lenahen. “He is a senior citizen who has proudly served his country. I will never forget the look on his face as he entered his newly renovated home, accompanied by his children and grandchildren.”

Our amazing local community came together through the Custom Builders and Remodelers Council in a remarkable way – dozens of businesses and volunteers donated their time, money, and materials to build an incredible Playhouse for this young man!
